Networking And Routes To Market

Resources and links

Once you have a clear idea of what your wants and needs are for your next role and what your skills and experiences are, it is time to think about your networks, what are the routes to market for your next role and how to start to think about your perfect job.

We all know how important our personal and professional networks are, up to 85% of people get their jobs through their network, therefore it is important to really think about who are those people within your network that might be able to support with your job searching.  We take people through a fractions exercise to really identify those within your network that know you and your skills and those that could help with introductions to people in sectors that you are interested in working in.

There are a number of routes to market which include your networks, working with recruiters, through job advertisements and speculative approaches.  All of these routes to market require a different approach in order to maximise your chances of success.

Finally when thinking about your job search, it is important to know where to look for roles, where specific sectors might advertise jobs and how a recruiter can help.

Kevin’s support has been invaluable and it is fair to say that without his support, I may have struggled to get my new job!

He helped me look at my achievements in a new way and enabled me to frame them in such a manner that I had a strategy for answering questions at the interview that kept me to the point and saying the right things at the right time.

He just energised me in a way that no one else has managed throughout this process.  His observations whilst, at times, “brutal” were spot on.  I would urge the University to utilise him more in the future.
