Negotiating your offer...

When you have been made an offer for a new role, you will need to consider your offer, salary and package and negotiate this based on your needs and expectations.

To start these negotiations you need to review and be honest with yourself around what sort of package and salary makes you feel valued as well as having clarity of your current salary and the other benefits that may up your package.

When negotiating your offer, consider your current role and the role you have been offered and ask yourself the following to help with your negotiations:

  • Is it a larger role?

  • Does it have greater responsibilities?

  • Is it a similar role in a different sector?

  • Is it a similar role in a different geographic location?

  • What market forces are currently paying in the sector or defined areas of the country.

  • Do your research regarding salary differentiation, cost of living e.g. purchasing a new home and the comparatives.

  • If the role you are being offered came via a headhunter or a recruiter, does the offer match what they were stating the package was and did you understand any differences which could possibly occur if you were successful?

  • If the salary/package on offer is lower than you currently earn, could you negotiate against the following considerations:

  • Agree a salary review in 6 months based on performance in the new role.

  • Trade in some benefits E.g. take 4 weeks instead of 5 weeks holiday.

  • Reduce the number of days you work e.g. 9 days every 10 days.

  • Where are you prepared to sacrifice and what are your dealbreakers, it’s not good to play hard ball, understand where the offer has come from, constraints or internal practices?
