Job applications...

​

For many organisations, the start of the recruitment process will include completing an application form, in some cases there will also be an opportunity to include a cover letter and CV with the application form in other cases it may purely be an online application process.  

 

When applying via an application form, it is good to remember the following:

​

  • Read the instructions carefully.

​

  • Research the company.

​

  • Gather your information including researching the job fully that you are applying for.

 

  • Think about your achievements and the competencies you may want to use.

 

  • Be succinct.

 

  • Answer the questions carefully and add extra information if the process allows you to.

 

  • Don’t be afraid to sell yourself.

 

  • Most application forms ask for referees, ensure you have thought about this in advance.

  • Print off the application before submitting, check the format and spelling, check you have completed fully and answered each section. Ask someone you trust to review this for you.

 

  • As with your CV use powerful and confident language, e.g.

​​

  • Transformed, delivered, inspired.

  • Choose descriptive words like effective, consistent, determined and adaptable.

​

  • Save your work regularly if completing online.

​

​

  • Follow up on you application if you have not heard two weeks after the closing date.

​

  • If you are not successful, always seek feedback.

​

If the job application is just requiring a CV, think about the following:

 

  • Using the alignment model - Produce the best CV you can based on the alignment models wants and need for the role.

 

  • If it is a role which is not your specialism or within your sector use your functional CV.

 

  • If applying via email, always attach a cover email to present yourself and help the reader to understand why you are applying and specifically why are you are a good match for the role.
